Is one of your New Years resolutions to get fit? Glasgow Centurions are currently on the lookout for new members to join our ranks! Everyone over 18 is welcome regardless of age, sex or experience.
Centurions
We were founded in September 2014 and have just completed our first full season. Although we have some experienced players and coaches we are, on the whole, a beginner’s team. Many of our players have only started playing the sport within the past 6 - 8 months. Over the course of the last year we played our first tournaments and leagues and expanded to over 30 members. Our membership includes male and female players of all different ages and walks of life, we are a diverse bunch! Would you like to be a part of our growing team?
Touch Rugby
So what is touch? Don't be put off by the word rugby! Touch is a minimal-contact version of the game which is suitable for all ages and abilities. It is played on a 70m x 50m pitch which is half the size of a standard rugby field. Touch is unique in that it is one of a few team sports where both men and women play together in the same mixed team. Its a relatively simple game where all that is needed is a rugby ball, some space to play and some people to take part! The game is similar in some ways to rugby league but does not including any of the tackling, mauling, lineouts, kicking, scrummaging or rucking. It can be a fast paced sport and is great for fitness.
Want to see touch in action? Check the highlights from the World Cup Mixed (men and women) Final between Australia and New Zealand below! We are definitely not quite at this standard but it gives you a flavour of what touch is all about! Don't worry you don't have to dive at the line quite dramatically as they do!
The skills you will develop while playing touch include teamwork, communication, ball control, agility and of course general fitness. As well as all this you will get the chance to meet our awesome team of friendly players who will be happy to welcome you to the club! No experience is required to join our training sessions and if you are new to the sport it would be an ideal opportunity to get involved one of the world fastest growing team games. We train outdoors weekly in Victoria Park and all our sessions are free. Why not come down, meet our team and find out what touch is all about! We look forward to seeing you!
Training Sessions
Our Saturday training sessions usually number around 12 - 14 players and include:-
• A warm up
• Fitness exercises
• Coaching on touch rules and plays
• A social game to finish
All new players are very welcome regardless of experience. Our coaches will take separate smaller beginners groups to get you up to speed with the rules so you can get involved in a game as soon as possible. If you feel like watching a game being played before getting stuck in feel free to watch our social game at the end of the session! One of our coaches can talk you through the rules as the game is being played. You can also pop down and observe a session before deciding to join in.
Please note that due to health and safety reasons everyone who takes part in training must do so wearing plastic moulded studded boots. Trainers and metal studs are not allowed and you will not be allowed to take part in the session if you wear these.
Also be aware that training sessions are weather dependant. To make sure the session is going ahead you can find up to date information on Twitter @Centuriontouch and on our Facebook page.
Hopefully see you soon!
